Contact Lenses for Special Situations

Some eye conditions make traditional contact lenses difficult to wear or prevent them from providing clear, comfortable vision. Specialty contact lenses are designed to address these challenges and provide improved visual clarity and comfort. These conditions may include:

  • Keratoconus
  • Irregular Corneas
  • Severe Dry Eye
  • Post-Lasik Complications
  • Corneal Transplant Complications
  • Ocular Graft vs. Host Disease
  • Steven-Johnson Syndrome
  • Sjogren’s Disease
  • Pellucid Degeneration

During your initial visit, we perform a comprehensive evaluation that may include:

  • Medical eye examination
  • Corneal topography
  • Digital slit lamp imaging
  • Specialty contact lens fitting

Using advanced lens designs and ultra-high-speed imaging technology, we customize lenses specifically for your eyes. Because specialty fittings are more complex, appointments are typically longer than standard eye exams, and several adjustments may be needed to achieve the best possible fit.

Types of Specialty Contact Lenses

Scleral Lenses

Scleral lenses are larger-diameter lenses designed to vault over the cornea and rest on the sclera (the white part of the eye). The space between the lens and the cornea is filled with a fluid reservoir, which acts like a protective cushion for the eye. This design can:

  • Improve vision for irregular corneas
  • Protect damaged or sensitive corneal tissue
  • Relieve severe dry eye symptoms
  • Reduce pain and light sensitivity

Scleral lenses are sometimes used as part of PROSE (Prosthetic Replacement of the Ocular Surface Ecosystem) therapy for patients with significant ocular surface disease. BostonSight® scleral lenses are among the specialty options available.

Rigid Gas Permeable Lenses

Rigid gas permeable lenses are made from a durable, breathable material that maintains its shape on the eye. It allows the lens to create a smooth optical surface, often providing sharper vision than soft lenses or glasses for certain conditions.

In some cases, a “piggyback” technique may be used, placing a soft lens beneath the RGP lens to improve comfort while maintaining excellent vision.

Hybrid Contact Lenses

Hybrid lenses combine two lens materials:

  • A rigid gas permeable center for crisp, clear vision
  • A soft outer skirt for enhanced comfort

This combination provides the visual performance of rigid lenses with the comfort of soft lenses. SynergEyes® hybrid lenses are FDA-cleared for keratoconus vision correction and are often an excellent option for patients who need both visual precision and comfort.
