Eye allergies can cause persistent itching, redness, and irritation that interfere with daily comfort. With proper diagnosis and targeted treatment, allergy symptoms affecting the eyes can often be managed effectively.
Eye allergies, also called allergic conjunctivitis, occur when the immune system overreacts to substances that normally do not cause harm. When allergens come into contact with the eye, the body releases histamines that cause inflammation in the conjunctiva—the thin tissue that covers the white of the eye.
This reaction can lead to itching, redness, tearing, and swelling. Eye allergies may occur seasonally, such as during pollen season, or year-round if triggered by indoor allergens like dust mites or pet dander.
